Introduction to water pollution

Water pollution, in simple terms, can be defined as the contamination of the water bodies when pollutants are released into the water without thorough treatment and removal of harmful components.

Water pollution can occur in oceans, rivers, lakes, and underground reservoirs, and as different water sources flow together the pollution can spread.

Sources of water pollution
There are two categories of source of water pollution. These are point and non point sources.

Point sources are those that release harmful substance directly into a water body. Oil spills and the release of industrial effluent (liquid waste) directly into water bodies are examples of point sources.

Non point source delivers pollutants into the water bodies indirectly through environmental change. An example of these types of water pollution is when fertilizer from field is carried into a stream by surface runoff.
